Our goal is to build a Middle School for low-income students in Decatur at the Episcopal Church of the Holy Cross. Current plans involve opening in Fall of 2010 with 15 girls and 15 boys in the 5th grade, and growing one grade every year through 8th grade. ![]() Click here to listen to Candice from our tutoring program.

PurposeThe Corporation is organized exclusively for the charitable and educational purposes of providing high quality education to children who qualify for the Federal Free/Reduced Lunch Program. We will partner with parents and the community, providing under-served youth with academically excellent programs to facilitate the development of mind, body and spirit, encouraging each child to reach her or his God given potential. MethodsWe are dedicated to providing curriculum based on research of the most effective approaches. Each student will be evaluated and an individualized education plan will be developed based that pupil's abilities and needs. Each student's unique talents and interests will be nurtured. Intervention resources, such as remedial tutoring, will be utilized as part of each learner's individualized education plan. Our goal is to guide St. Laurence students toward self-fulfilled Christian adulthoods in which they make positive contributions to their communities and the world. The National Association of Episcopal Schools (NAES) and The NativityMiguel Network of Schools have been our mentors. As members of these networks we have gained help and guidance in structuring Saint Laurence. Through the Nativity Network we have also received substantial funding for our Startup Phase. This nationwide and highly successful model is similar to many cutting edge schools. The network currently has 61 Middle Schools in the United States. NAES, an independently incorporated, voluntary membership organization, supports, serves, and advocates for the vital work and ministry of those who serve over 1,200 schools, Early Childhood Education programs, school establishment efforts, and their sponsoring institutions throughout The Episcopal Church. Within NAES, a new organization has been formed which mirrors The Nativity Network. This is called the Episcopal Urban School Alliance (EUSA) and it is focused on creating schools for low-income children like the Network. Saint Laurence is a founding member of this group, who recently met with the Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church (The leader in North America) who endorsed our efforts. Additionally, the National Church Body recently adopted the following: "Resolution A110 of the 2009 General Convention reads in part: Resolved, That, the Standing Committee on National Concerns encourage Episcopal Schools to cooperate with NAES to explore and develop further new and bold educational models with underserved and economically challenged communities, focusing on systems, capacity and resources, and the story of those initiatives and efforts be included in the SCNC Blue Book report to the 77th General Convention in 2010; and be it further Resolved, That the Episcopal Schools, working through the NAES collaboration with the SCNC, be encouraged to further strengthen their leadership in addressing economic disparities, by finding new and bold ways to increase the availability of scholarships and sliding fee scales for elementary schools, high schools and colleges and report such findings to the SCNC for inclusion in the Blue Book report to the 77th General Convention in 2010." This is a movement. It is not a question of if but rather when will we open our doors. |
